Lucky Girl

A Coming of Spirit Memoir

by Diane and Robert Vieira

Lucky Girl is a memoir of love, loss, grief, and the quiet persistence of hope. Set against the backdrop of rural New England, it traces the journey of a young girl shaped by the unpredictability of family chaos and emotional dysregulation. What enfolds is a personal exploration of inherited trauma, survival, and the long, often unspoken road toward healing.

With unflinching honesty and clarity, the authors unveil a family culture both simple and complex—influenced by psychosocial and socioeconomic pressures. Lucky Girl offers a tender yet courageous reckoning with the turbulence of dysfunction, and the grace required to emerge from its grip.

No longer protected by the veneer of toxic positivity, Diane and Robert Vieira embrace the messiness of memory, revealing the blemishes as part of the beauty. It is a story of unraveling and remaking, of reckoning with the past in order to step fully into the present.

At its heart, Lucky Girl is a testament to the power of reflection, the liberation found in truth-telling, and the quiet triumph of becoming whole. A moving tribute to resilience, this memoir invites readers to consider the ways we inherit, endure, and ultimately transcend our beginnings.

About the Authors

Diane and Robert live in Portsmouth, New Hampshire where they breathe new life into their days through art, writing, and service. Diane, raised in rural New England, was shaped by the quiet ache of family dysfunction and the resilience that hardship demands. It was not until retirement from a long career in food sales—and a breast cancer diagnosis—that she felt called to tell her story: one of unraveling, reckoning, and ultimately transformation.

Robert, a retired clinical social worker, became a key partner in helping Diane find and share her voice. After stepping away from their professional careers, the couple embraced reinvention, turning to oil painting as their medium of choice.

Together they have carved out a creative life filled with purpose, connection, and healing—giving back through their art, their writing, and service to their community.
