Sandwich FairSandwich Fair Through the Years: 1886-2010

by Joan Cook

Joan Cook has done it again! This, her second book (the first was Exposed, Unbanked, Weatherbeaten Knowledge Box, The Schools of Sandwich, New Hampshire, 1802-1950) is yet another gift to the town of Sandwich. She has researched dates and developed a time line of events spanning more than 100 years. The photographs show examples of how life was "way back when." She has brought to life the people who made the Sandwich Fairs so wonderful and enjoyable throughout the years. Once just names to many of us, Joan has revealed their faces and characters with her photographs and stories.

It is with great pride that the Sandwich Fair Association opened the doors of the new Sandwich Fair Museum during the 100th Sandwich Fair in 2010. The museum came to fruition due to Joan's dream, her efforts, and her persistence. Certainly others helped, but most definitely it would not have happened without her.

This book is like a museum in book form. Step back in time and enjoy the Sandwich Fairs over the years. Look closely—you may be part of the history of the Sandwich Fairs!
-- Dan Peaslee, President, Sandwich Fair Association

About the Author

Joan Cook lives in Center Sandwich, New Hampshire, with her husband of fifty-seven years, Wilbur. Both Joan and Wilbur were born and raised in Sandwich. She has been very active with the Sandwich Historical Society, especially in preserving the history of the one-room schools of Sandwich. Her research led to the compilation of a book, Exposed, Unbanked, Weatherbeaten, Knowledge Box: The Schools of Sandwich, New Hampshire, 1802-1950, which was published in 2004. In anticipation of the 100th anniversary of the Sandwich Fair, the Sandwich Historical Society, in conjunction with the Sandwich Fair Association, worked to establish a museum commemorating the history of Sandwich Fair. Joan's participation in that project prompted her to document the history in this book.
